Phthalates are chemical products mainly used to make PVC soft and flexible (a plastic widely used in the field of food packaging, including alcoholic beverages).
They are also present in the composition of many adhesives, sealants, paint pigments and other materials.

Commission Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 of 14 January 2011 "concerning plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs" provides for specific migration limits (SML) applicable to some phthalates (see table).

Since the entry into force of EU Reg. n. 10/2011, controls by foreign supervisory institutes began but, in the last months of 2012, following detections of concentrations exceeding the legal limits, more in-depth checks were carried out to try to identify the source(s) of the 'pollution.

The Vassanelli Lab® Agri-food Laboratory is able to immediately satisfy your every need:

- research and quantification of phthalates in beverages
- study of a sampling protocol to identify and reduce the sources of pollution (raw material, production process, adjuvants)

The method of analysis on alcoholic beverages (such as in wine), already operational and available to customers, was developed by our R&D department and provides for the execution of the analysis using GC-MSMS (gas chromatography with mass detector mass).
